Following the unexpected success of my first "Learn English With Photos" course on iTunes U (over 140,000 students enrolled!), I'm pleased to announce that "Learn English With Photos 2.0" is now available. In addition to the ten photo-based videos I've already posted on this blog, you get PDF transcripts and glossaries, crosswords, word search puzzles, and quizzes. You can subscribe to the course here.

Site of the Day: American English
OVERVIEW
American English is a is a resource center for teaching and learning about American English language and culture. This website provides a variety of engaging materials and resources for teachers' professional development and for students in the classroom. Both teachers and students will find new ways to practice English and learn more about the United States. The site is managed by the U.S Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
COMMENT
A wonderful site for teachers and learners of English alike. The resources are amazing, and range from books and lesson plans to music and interactive videos. For example, just look at this 136-page PDF reader about the customs, government, and history of the United States of America, or this history of fast food. Brilliant! You can search for resources by keyword, or browse by audience, pedagogical category, skills, content type, or theme. You can even create a list of your favorite resources and email them to yourself (or a friend) so you can find them again. I can't recommend this site highly enough.
TIP
Click on 'Downloadable Material' under 'Type of Content' to find resources in PDF or ePub format.
BBC Learning English Lower Intermediate Course
When I started this blog over 10 years ago BBC Learning English was easily the best ESL/EFL/ELT site on the web. Since then, of course, many other excellent sites have appeared (and a lot of terrible ones too!), but BBCLE remains a model of the genre. For example, this week the thirtieth and final episode of their Lower Intermediate Course was posted. So you now have a complete state-of-the art, 30-lesson course with video, quizzes, vocabulary and grammar notes — all for free. Let's hope they now follow that up with a more advanced course along the same lines.
TIP
When BBCLE revamped their site last year, a lot of the old resources were archived and are not available on the new site. However, you can still access this enormous treasure trove of teaching and learning material here.
BBC Learning English Intermediate Course
Last week I did a post about the BBC Learning English Lower-Intermediate course, which is now complete. I expressed the hope that they would follow it up with a more advanced course. Well, someone at the BBC must have been listening because they've just launched an Intermediate course. It follows the same format as the previous course, which means that there will be 30 weekly units, each containing several 'sessions' (or lessons) with an emphasis on grammar and vocabulary.
COMMENT
I know I've said it before, but I do think that BBC Learning English is the best free ESL site on the web, and probably better than a lot of ones you have to pay for. Does anyone disagree?
